Beyond Sausage™ is the world's first fresh, plant-based sausage that looks, sizzles, and satisfies like pork. It has all the juicy, meaty deliciousness of a traditional sausage, but comes with the upsides of a plant-based meal.
On a per cooked link comparison with a leading brand of pork sausage, The Beyond Sausage™ has:
14% more protein
43% less total fat
38% less sat fat
26% less sodium
27% less calories
You won't find any hormones, nitrites, nitrates, soy, or gluten in our sausage either. And, all our ingredients are non-GMO.
For a limited time, Beyond Sausage will be previewed at the Beyond Burger restaurant inside Whole Foods' Pearl St. location in Boulder, CO. This site has a special place in our hearts because it's where it all started with The Beyond Burger. Additional locations will be announced in January, so stay tuned. Our belief is that the best way to get people to eat less meat is by giving them what they love–in this case, a juicy delicious sausage – without so many of the health, sustainability, and animal welfare downside of a traditional animal - based sausage.
In the same way it simply makes sense to sell plant-based milks (like almond and soy milk) in the section of the store where consumers currently go looking for milk, savvy retailers are realizing it’s helpful to their shoppers-- and good for business!--to merchandise remarkable plant-based meats like The Beyond Burger in the “meat set.” 70% of Americans say they’re looking for protein alternatives to traditional animal based meat. We say, why not make it easy for them by offering expanded choice for different types of meat where they currently shop.
The primary source of protein in Beyond Sausage™ comes from peas, along with fava and rice proteins. It’s soy, gluten and GMO free.
The casing is made of alginate, which is obtained from algae. It is a natural product and 100% plant-based. Alginate is used in some fresh turkey and seafood based sausages to deliver a similar pop and texture as animal-based casings.
This question gets back to the company's basic thesis that meat's core parts - amino acids, lipids, trace elements, carbs and minerals - don't have exclusive residence in the animal kingdom. Our task is to eliminate the need for meat from animals and find the same or analogous materials in the plant kingdom. We are not inventing new materials but matching the plant equivalent and assembling it in the architecture of meat. And the way we do that assembly is similar to the simple process used to make pasta - we mix our plant-based ingredients, compress the mixture, and then shape it into final product (in this case, packed into a plant-based casing).
