Position Description

This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of New Product Development. The Food Scientist is responsible for collaborating with the Marketing team to develop new product concepts based on consumer insights.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with Marketing to develop new product concepts based on consumer insights

Translate market needs into technical project concepts, and provide direction to the core research group to develop and implement solutions

Utilize core research capabilities and know how to develop new products and improve existing products

Leverage internal and external technology capabilities to develop products that match or exceed consumer needs and provide significant competitive advantage. Secure patent / IP where appropriate

Develop product prototypes on the bench, conduct pilot and commercial scale trials, establish data and make technical case for product feasibility

Actively support the innovation stage gate process: brain storming and ideation sessions, concept development, concept screening, feasibility and commercialization

Build cross-functional support when appropriate and develop project plans to drive development and implementation

Lead product development projects from concept to commercialization, including development of overall technical project plan, meeting milestones and launch deadlines

Follow established technical report writing formats to document project reports

Conduct sensory and shelf life studies as part of technical feasibility prior to launch

Collaborate with quality, packaging and operations to develop ingredient, product, packaging and process specifications based on product quality requirements. Establish minimum requirements on ingredient COAs

Design finished product specifications based on consumer insights, nutritional and label claims, and regulatory and food safety requirements

Effectively communicate product ideas and technical test results with project teams and leadership during stage gate reviews and other cross-functional forums

Continuously search for and vet advanced technologies that complement areas of strategic focus

Qualifications

Proven ability to combine scientific insight with strong technical skills and business acumen

Experience working in a matrix and highly collaborative team orientated environment

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

BS and MS degrees in Food Science: Ph.D. preferred

Minimum 5-year experience in product development with Food CPG company

Excellent analytical, organizational and multi-tasking skills, as well as the ability to interact and collaborate successfully with all levels and functional areas

Preferred product experience: Meat, formed meat, vegetarian, meat analogue, extruded snacks, food hydrocolloids, RTE foods, frozen foods, better-for-you foods (GMO free, Organic, Natural, Gluten free, etc)

Physical Demands: Frequent sitting at a desk, communication-using computer and phone.
Work Environment: Office environment with some travel (10% to 15%)
